I Promise

Happy New Years!!!! My New Years Resolution is to QUIT dipping. “Can you do it?” you ask.

I PROMISE!

When we fell in love, you looked into my eyes and asked, “Can you ever give this habit up for me?”

I PROMISE!

On bended knee, and months of courage behind my back, I asked you to marry me. You asked, “But will you please give up this terrible habit, for me?”

I PROMISE!

After months of planning, it is our wedding day. You begged me, “Now, more than ever, will you give up this addiction, please?”

I PROMISE!

Spread the news!! There will be a Little Big Dave running around the house. Pitter, Patter, running amok through the house. “Now, for our CHILD, will you PLEASE give this up?”

I PROMISE!

She’s HERE!! I am so happy, I cry. She is soooo beautiful, I weep with wonder and joy. With tears of pain and joy streaming down your face, you look at me and said, “Is this enough to make you quit? Will you do it for our daughter?

I PROMISE!

What…??? Another one…So soon??? Where did the time go? “You promised before…can you quit now, for our children?”

I PROMISE!

Ahhhhh…Graduation Day. Where did I lose 18 years? Where did time go? Is she REALLY this grown up? Is this the beautiful child I held so long ago and wept with joy? “I can give this up for her, I can do this…”

I PROMISE!

Engaged…WHAT?!?! Married…WHAT?!?! You are so young. This young man has come to steal my baby from me! What? What did you say? Will I quit as your wedding gift?

I PROMISE!

I am so sorry, Big Dave… The tumor is malignant. “Surely, you knew this day would come, sir…” Cancer… Only old people get cancer. My grandpappy dipped for over 75 years and died of old age. I can’t have cancer… “You must stop now, or you will die…”

I PROMISE!

Ahhhh…I smell orchids. I always did love orchids. The smell, the sight. They make me think of happier times. How sweet that my loving wife would spring for such expensive flowers…for my funeral…

After all, I did make a PROMISE…and I always keep my promises…right?
